Since 1992, Hercules Haralambides is Professor of Maritime Economics and Logistics (MEL), having taught at 9 universities (and in 7 different countries), most prominent of which being Erasmus University Rotterdam, National University of Singapore, and Singapore Management University. Currently, he is “Distinguished Chair Professor” at Dalian Maritime University (China) and Visiting Professor at Erasmus University Rotterdam. Hercules is the founder of the Erasmus Center for Maritime Economics and Logistics (MEL) (www.maritimeeconomics.com) and also the founding (and current) Editor-in-Chief of the quarterly journal Maritime Economics & Logistics (MEL), published by Palgrave-Macmillan (www.palgrave.com/41278) for the last 26 years. He has written and published more than 400 scientific papers, books, reports and articles in the wider area of geopolitics, strategic (port) infrastructures, port management and reforms, shipping management, and maritime logistics. He has consulted governments, international organizations and private companies all over the world including, for a number of years, the European Commission (during the years of Commissioner Kinnock). In the period 2011-2015 and in parallel to his academic duties, Professor Haralambides was President of the Italian port of Brindisi. In 2008, Professor Haralambides was decorated with the Golden Cross of the Order of the Phoenix, by the President of the Hellenic Republic.

The Dutch shipping company is internationally renowned for its large fleet of mostly ice-strengthened general cargo vessels. His focus areas include crewing, fleet management, HSEQ and project & new building. In addition, he holds various board functions, including chairing the Royal Association of Dutch Shipowners.

A Senior Sustainable Transport Specialist currently based in Ankara, Türkiye, in the past fifteen years Andrew has been leading World Bank investment and analytical operations on climate change, transport, and sustainable development in Africa, Europe and Central Asia, the Middle East, and Latin America. Andrew’s maritime career began over twenty-five years ago as a naval officer. Before joining the Bank, he was the Manager of Environmental Policy for the Canadian Shipowners Association, a Senior Climate Policy Analyst in the Canadian federal department of transport, and an oil spill contingency planner for the Canadian Coast Guard in the Arctic. Andrew holds a Master of Environmental Studies from York University and a Bachelor of Industrial Engineering from the University of Toronto.

Gust is a seasoned International maritime- and ship finance professional. He has had an international career in the field spanning over 3 decades in both commercial- and risk management roles, based in the Netherlands, Greece and Hongkong. Between 2008 and 2018, Gust served as Global Head and Managing Director Transportation Clients for ABN AMRO bank, at the time one of the leading ship finance franchises in international banking. In 2020, in response to increasing demand for “green” capital in the maritime industry, he co-founded Prow Capital, a fund manager focused on providing tailor-made debt financing to support the maritime industry’s transition towards a zero-emission future through its Green Shipping Fund. Gust is based in Rotterdam and holds a Master’s degree in Business and Economics from Erasmus University in Rotterdam (1989), has completed an executive MBA at CEDEP in Fontainebleau, France (2007) as well as INSEAD’s International Directors Programme (IDP 27; graduation expected September 2019).

Karin Orsel became a shipowner and maritime entrepreneur at the age of 23 and she has been CEO of her ship management company MF Shipping Group since 2001. In 2017, she was appointed President of the Royal Association of Netherlands Shipowners (KVNR). Karin Orsel has received the “Industry Leader Award 2019” at the Tanker Shipping & Trade Conference in London, the “Personality of the Year 2019” at the WISTA International General Meeting and she is an Honorary Doctor of Public Administration Degree of the Massachusetts Maritime Academy in recognition of her significant contributions to the maritime industry.

Murat Avinal is a Naval Architect and Marine Engineer with extensive experience in ship design and production. He has been working with NAVTEK Naval Technologies Inc. since 2000, holding key positions such as Project Coordinator Assistant, Design Engineer, Responsible Project Engineer, Head of Calculation Division, Deputy General Manager and currently, General Manager. Avinal specializes in managing projects like the ZEETUG (Zero Emission Electric Tugboat), STEMS (Smart Tugboat Energy Management System), Port Decarbonization projects, and the H2YDROTUG, which utilizes hydrogen fuel cell technology. Gudrun Janssens studied Chemistry with a specialization in environmental sciences. In 2000 she started working at the Public Waste Agency of Flanders. During that time, she also successfully completed her studies at the Maritime Institute of the University of Ghent. As senior policy advisor and member of the Belgian delegation to the IMO, she outlined the Belgian policy on ships' waste management, waste shipments and ship recycling for over 15 years. In 2018 she joined the European Community of Shipowners’ Associations (ECSA) as their Director Environment and Maritime Safety. At ECSA she was responsible for the follow-up of all environmental and climate related shipping files, on the European and International level. Before joining BIMCO, she worked for two years as Head of Environmental and Technical Affairs at the Royal Belgian Shipowners Association in Antwerp. At BIMCO she now heads the BIMCO EU office in Brussels where she ensures the interest of the International Shipping Industry and focusses on the main environmental files in the EU such as Ship Recycling and relevant files under the EU Green Deal and the EU Fit for 55 package.

Burak Kemerci, a graduate in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering, further advanced his expertise with Master of Science degrees from World Maritime University and Istanbul Technical University, focusing on ship recycling in both programs. His career began with two years at prominent ship repair yards in Tuzla Bay before joining the Maritime Administration of Türkiye in 2006. He had the chance to follow up the developing process of Hong Kong Convention and attending several IMO meetings. Further, in 2010, he contributed to the initial draft of the Guidelines for the Authorization of Ship Recycling Facilities submitted to the IMO, collaborating with colleagues from Germany and France. With nearly two decades of experience in the inspection and certification of shipbuilding, repair and recycling facilities, he has been focusing in aligning national legislation with the Hong Kong Convention. Recently, he was appointed Head of the Shipyard Affairs Department. In addition to his administrative responsibilities, Burak is actively researching the application of artificial intelligence to predict accidents in shipyards and recycling facilities, reflecting his commitment to innovation in maritime safety.
